Great Marlborough StreetManchester
The Great Marlborough Street student residence is a 37 storey new build apartment block offering 540 beds, built by Student Castle. It was the tallest purpose-built student residence in the world upon completion, and the fourth tallest building in Manchester.
Brentwood Design Partnership were appointed to carry out the Mechanical, Electrical and Public Health design. A close working relationship was formed with the client and other team members in developing the Employers Requirements to RIBA Stage D.
The appointment then included subsequent novation to the contractor, Shepherd Construction, to complete the detailed design.
The development presented a number of challenges, not least providing a cost effective renewable energy strategy to meet the development aspirations. Air source heat pumps were specified and installed, reducing the heating and hot water energy consumption by an estimated 40%. The total renewable energy contribution exceeds 10%.
In addition to the air source heat pumps, almost 50 kW (peak) of solar photo voltaic panels were installed providing further significant Carbon and energy reduction along with operational cost savings.
